Issues with VR

Is VR the Right Choice?

Assess the Space

Consider the physical aspects of the space.  Is it suitable for a VR experience?

  • Lighting

    • Lighting can be tricky! The space needs to be bright enough to see all of the elements yet not create light pollution or shadows. Experimenting with different lighting influences - bulbs, window shades, etc. - can help determine the right lighting for the space. Take a few pictures with the 360 camera to preview how the space will appear in the VR experience!

  • Shape of the space
    • Round, square, long, or compact, the shape of the space determines where you'll put the camera and whether the experience will take place in a single or multiple rooms. How will you ensure that virtual visitors access all areas, or are there parts of the space that should be less accessible?
  • Moving through the space
    • Consider how a virtual visitor will move through the space. How will a virtual visit compare to a physical visit? Are there any elements that should be adjusted to accommodate access to artifacts, information panels, etc.?
  • Height and direction of the camera
    • The height of the camera determines the virtual visitor's view. Use a tripod to set it at eye level, or put the camera on a table to show how the space appears from a seated position. Consider what direction the visitor will be facing when entering the room.
  • Physical features within the space
    • Display cases, furniture, and props will impact what a virtual visitor can see and experience! How will you ensure that visitors can access or work around the space's physical elements?

Tell a Story

Virtual reality works well for telling stories. Before beginning a VR project, consider what and how to tell the story of your artifact, exhibit, collection, etc. How will someone in the virtual space experience the story? If you can envision how to effectively tell a story via this medium, then virtual reality may be the right choice for your project!
